The primary emphasis of the department is education. To accomplish this goal faculty in the department seek to obtain scientific knowledge and then disseminate this knowledge to clientele located in the state of Mississippi, the nation, and world.

The Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences faculty are identified in at least one of the three educational interests of the department:

Extension - Service to animal agriculture production clientele. Several areas of animal agriculture interests are focused upon primarily Beef, Dairy, Equine, and Swine industries as well as youth programs. Information exchange between the research scientist and animal agriculturalist remains one of the primary goals within the department.

Research - Advancing scientific knowledge regarding livestock specie. Research areas of interest within the department are very broad; some projects focused on developing new and/or innovative technologies, while other projects are intent on applying advances in scientific knowledge to production practices.

Teaching - Communicating current scientific knowledge to students enrolled in courses at Mississippi State University. The major focus of classes taught with in the department are primarily specie based, or discipline based.
